Senior Products & Networks Manager, Operations (Design, Build & Run)

Sam's story

“If you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in, then you’ll see results.”

I’ve worked in smart metering for more than ten years and have been connected to Smart DCC since its earliest days. Joining four years ago felt like a natural progression. I’d worked alongside the organisation from the start and was drawn to the people and the purpose behind what we do. Four years on, I haven’t looked back.

In my role today, I focus on making sure things work and understanding why they don’t when issues arise. That includes ensuring the network delivers the level of service our customer expect expected, as well as investigating and resolving problems when it doesn't.

It’s complex work, but that’s part of the appeal. A good day for me is about finding problems, improving the customer experience and simplifying the complex. That’s essential when you’re working in an organisation operating at national scale.

Balancing what’s right for customers, suppliers, different teams and the wider organisation can be challenging. My approach is always to focus on the end consumer and what’s best for them, while making sure everyone involved is clear on what’s being asked. Most of the time, people are aiming for the same outcome,. even if they have different views on how to get there.

For me personally, one of the of the best pieces of work I’ve been involved in is the 4G Communications Hub and Network programme.

As one of the largest national infrastructure projects in the country, delivering it on time and to budget was a major achievement. And what’s brought the most satisfaction since is embedding it into operations and seeing it continue to perform. It’s been a huge honour to be part of the team that’s made it a success.

Culture plays a big part in what makes Smart DCC such a rewarding place to work for me. I’d describe it as purposeful, energetic and supportive. One of the biggest surprises has been the mix of people here, colleagues from completely different backgrounds, with different interests and experiences. Being able to walk around the office, stop and have a chat, and share ideas is something I really value.

Since joining, Smart DCC has always taken my development seriously, supporting me through its inaugural leadership development programme and as part of the first cohort of the Talent Academy. From improving my presentation skills to building deeper technical knowledge, the focus has always been on helping me grow.

So, if you’re thinking about joining our mission to connect Britain to a smarter, cleaner and fairer energy system, my advice is simple. Be ready to roll up your sleeves, get stuck in and make an impact. This is a place where you can.
